My dad had problems with his backside, piles I think. Anyhow I can remember hearing him howling in agony and wiping away at his bottom with a very cold wet flannel because he'd rubbed Germolene into it as opposed to Savlon. Savlon is a cool cream which salves and eases discomfort whereas Germolene is like that stuff you rub into aching tired muscles which heats up the affected area.
